Why Is Dental Care Important?

Without regular dental care, your pet’s teeth will develop plaque, which hardens into tartar and breaks down their gums and even the bone density of their teeth. In time, the bacteria from the tartar can leak into the bloodstream and cause serious internal issues. Your pet’s teeth should be checked at least once a year by Dr. Kate for early signs of a problem and to keep your pet’s mouth healthy.

What Can I Do At Home?

Regularly brushing your pet’s teeth is the single most effective thing you can do to keep their teeth healthy between dental cleanings, and may reduce the frequency or even eliminate the need for periodic dental cleaning by Dr. Kate. Daily brushing is best, but let's be real. It’s not always possible, but anything is better than nothing. Most dogs accept brushing, but cats can be a bit more resistant – patience and training are important.

As a heads up, there are many products out there that are marketed with claims that they improve dental health, but not all of them are effective. If you have questions about some of these products, talk with Dr. Kate.
